Friday Fives, New Weekly Tech ‘Column’
Posted on February 8, 2008 by Stefanie Henderson
Knowing online learners and higher education professionals are usually juggling the demands of work, education, family and of course keeping up with technology, I thought it would be refreshing to create a weekly blog post that just shares five fun facts that relate to learning and technology. I am calling them ‘Friday Fives’ which could mean five great new elements that help you save time (or energy), five great things to think about when assessing new technology, or even five questions I am hoping you can answer! This week, my Friday Fives is all about FREE stuff out there (and truly the list could be called Top 100 but then would take you forever to read much less click through and check out):
- Skype: FREE talking over the Internet.
- WikiDot: FREE WIKI communication and collaboration tool.
- del.icio.us: FREE place to keep and share your favorite web links.
- flickr: FREE site to store, manage, and show-off your photos.
- Audacity: FREE digital audio editor.
Have a favorite not on my list? Please comment on this post and share the FREE wealth!

Hi Stefanie,
Great idea for a weekly post!
I have two tools that I use to stay organized. First, I use Google calendar
www.google.com/calendar. I have a personal calendar that only I can see, and I have a work calendar that I share with my coworkers so we can collaborate on projects and share schedules. The other tool I love is iGoogle www.igoogle.com. With iGoogle I have all of my favorite websites and blogs (including the UMass blog) all in one place. You can create tabs for different subjects as well. For example I have tabs like, News, Music, Personal Finance, Online Marketing, etc. It’s a great way to stay current with everything in one place.

Skype is definitely a personal favorite. One other freebie that is worth checking out is a free online storage utility called MediaMax. It provides up to 25GB of free storage, making it a great option for offsite storage of important personal files. If you have more serious backup requirements, you can purchase additional space up to one terabyte! More info at www.mediamax.com.
