National Survey of 1000 Moms Shows 75% Want More Higher Education

A healthy level of skepticism should routinely greet the outcome of any poll or survey unless verified or validated. With that being said, the survey noted in this online item should somewhat be taken lightly; it is not the results of a scientfic study. It was done by an institution of higher learning in an effort to determine if additional higher learning is desired by women with children thinking about returning to work, resuming their careers, and finishing degree programs that were interrupted by at-home duties and preferences.
Not surprisingly, the survey results showed that three-quarters of moms want more education, specifically a bachelor or graduate-level degree.
Based on my experience here as Director of Marketing for UMassOnline I have no reason to quibble over the numbers. They seem right about right to me both from a pure statistical basis as well intuitively. In fact, it hardly seems necessary to conduct a poll to reach this conclusion. More interesting, perhaps, would be the reasons given by 25% of the respondents explaining why more education was of little or no interest, don’t you agree?
