Podcasts 101: Podcatching (Part 1 of 3)
Posted on March 7, 2008 by Stefanie Henderson
Sure everyone has heard of or even used iTunes to listen or watch a favorite song, video, or movie. However, are you using iTunes or another podcatcher (or podcast receiver) to subscribe and manage your podcasts?
According to podcast.com, a podcast is a Portable, On-Demand audio or video file that is broadcasted via the Internet. Podcasts may include news as-it-happens, this semester’s lecture notes, a series of interviews with the latest presidential candidates, or an update on where your favorite artist may be next. One may subscribe to a single podcast or series of podcasts to listen to anytime using a podcatcher on your desktop or notebook or anywhere on an iPod or portable MP3 player.
Here are my top podcatchers for this week’s Friday Fives:
- iTunes: Not just for Macs, available for PCs too!
- Juice: PC and Mac podcast receiver.
- PodNova: Online podcatcher community for searching, sharing, and subscribing to files feeds.
- YamiPod: Multi-platform client for podcast management.
- aPodder: Free podcast client designed for partially sighted users.
Any other podcatchers missing from my list? Please comment below and be sure to visit part two of my “Podcasts 101″ blog next week for my top podcasting (publishing) software.

Thanks for the reference Stefanie — and from a fellow Massachusetts resident! We’re working toward creating a great experience for podcast listeners and viewers of all levels of knowledge. What we think is a nice feature of Podcast.com is that you can listen to or watch those podcasts right through our website, but we know how people like to take podcasts with them. That’s why we’re also working to make it easier for people to listen to podcasts on their mobile phones and other Web-enabled devices. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but the audience for podcasts is growing exponentially every year, and it makes us feel good to find innovative and useful ways to bring podcasts to that audience, including the readers of your great blog!
Best,
Justin
