“…as boundaries and borders disappear…”

ZDNet, an IT-focused media powerhouse, isn’t exactly the first place I’d go seeking news and views about online learning. But just the other day, I found this column by Christopher Dawson. He happens to be the technology director for the Athol-Royalston School District in northern Massachusetts.
He has some very interesting personal experiences learning a foreign language, some interesting stats on the growing popularity of learning Chinese in U.S. schools, and some very valid points about the ease with which you can learn a foreign language online. In short, he asserts that if you really want to understand a foreign culture, learn the language. I couldn’t agree more. As for the growing popularity of Chinese:
Just three years ago, only eight of Ohio’s 4,000 public schools offered Chinese. Now, more than 60 do, according to state education officials.
