N.C. State University Valedictorian Never ‘Attended’ a Single Class
Posted on March 23, 2009 by Barbara Macaulay
The first time Cheryl Zakaria showed up at East Carolina University (ECU) was to attend commencement – hers. She dropped in from Australia to pick up her master of science degree in industrial technology with a concentration in digital communications. She completed all the requirements online.
In this very compelling news item by Staff Writer Bonnie Rochman of The News & Observer, you can read about Ms. Zakaria as well as another student by the name of Lindsay Lewchuk:
Last semester, Lindsay Lewchuk graduated tops in her class, one of 33 valedictorians in an N.C. State University class of 1,787 graduating seniors… Lindsay who? Her fellow classmates could be forgiven for not knowing who she was. Lewchuk, 26, didn’t sit through a single class on campus… Battling an autoimmune disorder, Lewchuk took all her courses by distance learning.
Ten or fifteen years ago, so many of us could never imagine a world in which online learning would play such a major role and make it possible for people such as Cheryl and Lindsay get their degrees. Now, of course, many of us cannot imagine what would happen if distance learning were not an option! Yet one of our Deans at the Amherst campus told me a few weeks ago that he does not see roughly a quarter of his students until graduation….amazing!
We are getting close to graduation time in UMass—tell us your story!

My four years doing the MSIT at ECU were and are the four best years of my life. Alas, I never got a job in IT, but it was certainly a life changing experience for me. I would recommend online learning to everyone.
