Online Learning Knows No Age Limit
Posted on March 30, 2009 by Barbara Macaulay
I spotted this article today in one of my Google alerts. Titled “Eldest generation learns to stay in touch online: Connecting Gran,” it made me think of my own father who just turned 90. My sisters and I have been unsuccessful in convincing him to get some computer training so he could have email and other Internet tools—we think he would enjoy these. He has wonderful letter writing skills, he manages any number of digital-type devices, including a cell phone and a high definition television, he knows how to type, and he does several high-level crossword puzzles a day…so we think he would take to using a computer very well. But needless to say, this is his decision—we never did tell him what to do and we won’t start now!!
This article, however, also brings to mind that a natural audience for online learning is that of our senior citizens. From the comfort of their homes, they can learn about things they always wanted to know more about, make friends they never thought of getting to know, and keep their minds active with all kinds of new things to think about and do. Through UMassOnline, our campuses already have some non-credit courses in process that attract senior citizens and more are being developed. And maybe one of these days, I will get my father to look at one of them….
