Monday Musings

UMassOnline Barbara MacaulayMonday is a funny day of the week. Most of the time, we humans welcome the “new”—Happy New Year, new beginnings, back to school (for some this feels good!), the start of vacations—but Monday, the 1st day of the week, is another kettle of fish. I am guilty of viewing it with some amount of dread myself—having to be “on” again, getting back to the routine, losing the sense of optimism from Friday when the weekend looked so promising for getting things done…At the same time, there is a kernel of hope in terms of getting to new tasks, engaging with new people, resolving issues, and so forth. One of the things I do like is getting my priorities for the week put together. I like the list making and the sense of being organized that goes along with the process.

As I was thinking about the whole ying and yang of Monday mornings, I happened to spot this blog posting on Sunday night. Taken from the regular blog column titled “Confessions of a Community College Dean” found in Inside Higher Education, the author artfully describes his continuing saga of what my mother used to call the “Sunday night blues.” What all of this says to me is that we all have this funny relationship with time and days of the week and what they mean to us in terms of our energy and engagement.

Well, Monday musings are done and now it is time to start the work week!!
