6 Predictions for the Future of Learning
Posted on May 18, 2009 by Jennifer Brady
Professionals that specialize in training employees have some predictions about the future of learning that may interest you, especially since their views include perspectives of online and blended instruction. The views came to light during a webcast presented by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). Having spent many years in the corporate training industry, I continue to follow learning trends through ASTD, SHRM and other corporate training industry thought leaders like Josh Bersin and Elliott Masie since the principle points easily transcend the corporate borders into academia.
You can read more about each of the six predictions at this link, but in headline form, here are their predictions:
Learning will evolve beyond training, blended learning will be redefined, learning will move to the workplace, learning and e-learning will be less course-centric and more knowledge-centric, learning strategies will adapt differently to different levels of mastery, and “Web 2.0” will revolutionize learning.
The nice thing about predictions for the predictors is no one can say they’re wrong… yet. In this case, their last prediction about Web 2.0 is already true, so they are 1 for 6! Their prediction that learning can and will be customized for the individual learner and his or her “mastery” of the subject is the one that intrigues me the most. It’s not the first time I’ve heard it. Former UMassOnline CEO David Gray often talked about this potential.
Do you have a prediction about the future of learning that you want to share, online or otherwise?

This was an interesting article to read even though it’s not new information
I’ve seen the power of learning exhibited in these six predictions for the past ten years (with the exception of “web 2.0″ of course, but “web 2.0″ can be substituted for any technology in this context.
I’ve seen this in both online communities of practice and in the classroom setting when I was completing my MBA. The big question is how one goes about integrating these into industry and academia and how you win over stakeholders so that they can participate and make the system a success.
My hope (and prediction) is that as we go forward we will see more people with an interdisciplinary background, and more interdisciplinary teams working together to achieve these leaps in education and training (among other things) because great feats cannot be accomplished by having only __________ (insert profession of choice) at the helm
