How Would You Re-write Your Story?
Posted on May 29, 2009 by Jennifer Brady
Even though this post is about a story that spotlights another online college and features an online student that does not attend UMassOnline, I wanted to put it out here for all Moms considering degree completion or whole degree programs online. Why? For two reasons: One, the article explains how and why mothers are seeking more job security by advancing their education. And two, one of these Moms said something that stayed with me since I believe we can and should change our own destinies.
The story chronicles Chris Dulaigh-Bates, a 56-year-old medical transcriptionist and mother of two. Here’s what she shared that leapt out at me, with an emphasis on her last two sentences:
“In 1968, my father advised me I didn’t need a college education. He said all I needed was to get married and take up homemaking… I have worked out of my home for the last 17 years, but over the course of the last five years, technology and world trade have eroded away the job security I once enjoyed.”
“My future needs a new ending,” she says. “I’m going to school to help rewrite the ending to my story.”
You can read the full story online, or feel free to share your story here. Have you changed your own path? Working on a better ending? Please share!
