It’s that time again… Back to School!

UMassOnline Som SengBut, this time I will be officially done after completing these two classes.  I met with my advisor today and she gave me the graduation clearance form, which feels so real.  I will get my MBA finally!  I’ve been working full-time and trying to complete my MBA now for almost 5 years, and it’s coming to an end.  I feel excited, yet anxious at the same time.  What will I do after this?  What will I do with my time?  Of course I can’t just enjoy… I always need to think of what’s next.  At the same time, I always feel some anxiety before starting up school again after a long summer break. But, winter break does that to me as well.  I still worry, and ask myself “How will I do in this class?”  And…I get nervous about figuring out how to do it all – school, work, LIFE!  Somehow I always end up figuring it out, and I feel this great sense of accomplishment at the end of the semester.  I just need to remind myself of that.  What really helps is a checklist, and so far I get to say “done” to almost half of my To Do list. I’m feeling good!

To Do list

Review degree requirements – check
Triple check with advisor that you meet all the graduation requirements – check
Pick out last two courses for the program and make sure they satisfy graduation requirements – check
Make sure there are no holds on the account - check
Register for the classes – check
Order books – check (still waiting for books to come out, but pre-ordered)
Follow up on book order
Pay for the classes
Fill out Tuition Waiver
Fill out Graduation Clearance form in the middle of September

Congrats! It is indeed a great feeling to know that you are near the finish line :-)

Thank you for your encouraging words! I’m very excited. Are you close to completing your program as well?

I am about a year away from completing mine. I decided to do 2 Masters concurrently because they fit so well together and I alternate courses each semester between Instructional Design (available on UMass Online) and Applied Linguistics (also available through UMass Online - but I am in the face to face program since I am local).

There is very little time for rest and relaxation - until I graduate :-) My “trick” for school is that I do a lot of reading on the train to/from work :-) That has helped keep late-night studying to a minimum :-)

Wow, congrats too! That’s a great trick. I live only a few minutes away from work so my trick is to leave work at a decent time so I can focus on school, and I try to do school work during lunch. What do you plan on doing once you’ve completed both of your degrees?

Linguistics is for fun because I like languages - but I do plan to use what I learn to try and teach Modern Greek part time.

What I learn Instructional Design I use at work now, but in the future I want to be more involved in Academic Technology - both in the back end dealing with technology adoption issues and in the front end offering consulting to professors who teach face to face and want to change gears and teach online. I also want to work with professors who teach online when they have questions about academic technology.

Lofty goals - but my motto is one step at a time - it’s good to enjoy the classroom experience - no need to rush :-)

It’s always good to have short-term and long-term goals. I am doing the same w/ my MBA - using what I’ve learned to improve what I currently do. But, honestly I think this degree will help me through out my life. It’s so flexible.

I like your motto - one step at a time!
