Should Online Learning be included this Decade’s ‘Top 10’ of Internet Developments?

Posted on November 30, 2009 by Jennifer Brady

UMassOnline Jennifer BradyWriting for cnet news, Lance Whitney developes an extension to a list of top 10 Internet moments in the 2000 to 2009 decade according to the ’Webby Awards.’ But before you take a look at the official list and some suggestions or alternatives named by Mr. Whitney, what would you identify as the most important or influential Internet moments of the decade?

As you can see here, the Webby Awards didn’t mention online learning in its Top 10. Most likely an oversight. But it is one that gets corrected in cnet’s alternate list which, frankly, includes a number of events that many will think deserve to win a Webby. Here’s what is said about the Internet’s contribution to at-home jobs and online learning:

The rise of home workers: Thanks to the Internet, you can now run a full-fledged business or work for your employer without having to leave the house. There’s also online education–with many accredited schools now online, today you can attend college or graduate school and get a full degree from your own computer.

I have to agree with the culmination of both lists as being the most notable events to transform our day to day lives. How about you? Want to nominate something that’s not on either list?
