Bringing Leadership Training Online
Posted on December 22, 2009 by Jennifer Brady
This is a guest post by Victoria Matthew, Director, Program Development, Continuing & Professional Education (CPE), at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Each year, some 16,000 students choose UMass Amherst Continuing & Professional Education for learner-driven programs that draw on the expansive resources found only at a major institution of higher learning. Geared to the nontraditional learner, students range from working professionals building their skills base, to college students designing their own majors, to adults extending their universe. While this post from Ms. Matthew is focused on leadership training offerings, she has also been in the news recently for her involvement in green building courses. Earlier this year, for example, she was a presenter at the first Massachusetts Green Career Conference held Oct. 2 in Marlborough where she served on a panel that discussed college and company training programs that offer courses and programs on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainability courses and programs. Overall, she has been instrumental in establishing the CPE’s Green Building Professional Development Series and the University Without Walls’ Sustainable Entrepreneurship Concentration.
Late last month in an article on CNNMoney, Stephen R. Covey, acclaimed leadership trainer and author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, announced he would be expanding his training reach using web conferencing technologies.
As today’s businesses grapple with tight budgets and busy schedules, virtual trainings make a lot of sense. Indeed, virtual trainings can present a 32% cost-savings over traditional, in-person training by eliminating travel time, time-off-job and course overhead costs.
To meet this need, UMass Amherst and the UMass Donahue Institute (UMDI) have teamed up to offer the Online Leadership Excellence Certificate. This certificate will incorporate customized projects and scenarios to help students analyze leadership issues and concepts occurring in their organizations. Students will use a team approach to develop real time solutions.
Taught by Jeffrey Davis, M.Ed., one of UMDI’s most senior leadership trainers, this certificate will launch in March 2010. Students may register individually or businesses and organizations can contract with UMDI to train an entire group of staff.
