Clarifying How Accreditation Works for Programs Marketed by UMassOnline
Posted on January 5, 2010 by Jennifer Brady
Here’s an online site that recently highlighted UMassOnline and the programs offered through our consortium on behalf of the five University of Massachusetts campuses. And while we’re grateful for the attention, as always, there’s just one technical thing that should be noted. The site says: Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, UMassOnline is the online branch of the University of Massachusetts. That’s not actually how it works.
UMass programs marketed by UMassOnline carry the accreditation of long-standing for each traditional campus. Degrees and course credits are also the direct responsibility of each campus offering online options. Put another way, students taking courses and degree programs offered via the online format earn their degrees and credits from the University of Massachusetts, not UMassOnline.
[For the record, UMassOnline does not pay to advertise on this blog site.]
