UMassOnline CEO Dr Ken UdasI would like to take this opportunity to introduce a distinguished colleague who has recently accepted our offer to serve as UMassOnline’s next Chief Technology Officer and joins us on May 3rd.  I have had the opportunity to follow Pat’s career and to observe his role as a facilitator and catalyst for organic and emergent change. It is Pat’s experience with agile methods and commitment to open decision making and governance that in my mind sets him apart from many of his colleagues and is at the root of many of his professional accomplishments.   Bringing more than 17 years experience in instructional and information technologies supporting education, research, and healthcare within traditional and online campus and university-wide environments, he joins UMassOnline from significant Information Technology management, implementation, and executive leadership roles within the State University of New York (SUNY) system over the past six years and, for 11 years prior to that, with the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

In his most recent role as Chief Information Officer for the past four years at SUNY’s College of Technology at Delhi in Delhi, New York, Pat facilitated the implementation and support of the campuses’ broad array of administrative, academic, residential and online IT services and systems. Prior to that, from 2004 to 2006, he served as Director of Technology Projects for SUNY Learning Environments (SLN). In this role he was responsible for leading the design, development, deployment and maintenance for the State university of New York Learning Environments’ enterprise-level projects including SUNY’s system-wide e-learning platform delivering asynchronous and blended courses for more than 100,000 enrollments, 4,000 courses and 3,500 faculty through the 2006-07 academic year.

Prior to that, throughout an eleven year period of steady advancement and promotion at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1993 to 2004, he extended the use of technology through a variety of educational, research and patient care initiatives. In his last position there, as Director for eight years of the UCLA Media Center for the UCLA School of Dentistry, he led the identification and implementation of new services, strategies, policies and procedures in response to emerging technologies and techniques as well as faculty and staff interests. In this role he had oversight of all informational and instructional technology projects and services including distance learning, internet and intranet development, and advanced computing.

Patrick, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Design at the University of California, Davis and is currently pursuing his Masters of Arts in Management and Policy at State University of New York, Empire State College, is an active participant in various higher education and technology oriented organizations. These include serving as: Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect, SUNY Council of CIO’s; Co-Chair, EDUCAUSE Openness Constituent Group; “SIG Master,” NERCOMP Special Interest Group on Open Source, and; a member of The Agile Alliance and Certified Scrum Product Owner. Additionally, he has written and presented widely on Agile project management, online learning, Open Source Software and Openness.

Please do take the opportunity to welcome Pat Masson into the UMass community and wish him good fortune.
